in 1835 from June 6-22, workers at Philadelphia’s Schuykill coal wharves inspired other workers from across the city to strike, successfully advocating for a 10-hour workday and increased wages, and setting the standards for improved working hours throughout the country. (Prior to that, expected working hours for most laborers were sunrise to sunset.)
